Planet Hippo Breaks US Blockage of British-Made Cadbury Chocolate

The US blockade started last year when chocolate giant Hershey Inc banned the import of many British sweets claiming it created “brand confusion” with its own products. The company subsequently sued two importers to block Cadbury chocolate bars and other British sweets from being shipped to the United States.
As part of what many in the US are calling “the Boston Tea Party . . . in chocolate,” a mini-trade war has erupted with many Cadbury devotees now boycotting Hershey in retaliation for this blockade. In addition, many thousands of consumers and small retailers across the country are using social media to urge Hershey to allow them legal access to their favourite British treat. A petition on MoveOn.org has already attracted more than 36,000 signatures protesting Hershey’s tactics.
Chocolate connoisseurs say that British-made Cadbury chocolate tastes creamier and is smoother than Cadbury chocolate made by Hershey’s in the USA. This is because in the UK, the first ingredient of a classic Dairy Milk bar is milk whereas in the USA, where Hershey has the license to make and sell all Cadbury products, the first ingredient is sugar.
